What's Your Transition Bag And What's In it?

A triathlon is more than the swim, bike and run. It's the proper gear, well-maintained and laid out for fast in and out of transition. First-time triathletes tend to over pack for peace of mind, but experienced athletes know exactly what's needed:

A triathlon is more than the swim, bike and run. It's the proper gear, well-maintained and laid out for fast in and out of transition. First-time triathletes tend to over pack for peace of mind, but experienced athletes know exactly what's needed:

The right bag for the job:

The best transition bags are lightweight but sturdy material, with strong, adjustable, padded straps and several compartments. At least one compartment is plastic-lined to keep wet clothes separated from everything else. The backpack-style bags have the advantage of easy lifting and carrying while leaving your hands free to move your bike from registration and body marking into transition. Folding transition bags take up less space in the corral and your closet.

What goes inside:

Transition mat or towel (to put under the rest of your gear)

Tri suit

Wetsuit

Cycling shoes (you can also clip these to your pedals to save space)

Running shoes

Cycling and/or running socks

Race belt (to secure your number around you as you start the run, instead of using pins)

Body lube

Sunscreen

Goggles

Swim cap

Race number for your bike (or secure this to your bike before you arrive to save bag space)

Helmet

Sunglasses

Watch

Hair band or hair ties (to keep long hair in place)

Nutrition (frozen blocks of liquid nutrition for your bike bottle thaw in time for the ride; packets of gels and chews for the run)

Change of clothes

Where transition gear goes when you unpack:

According to USA Triathlon's Article VII, all equipment is placed in the individually assigned bike corral  and maintained so it does not interfere or impede the progress of another competitor. That means keep your gear neat, directly under your bike and in event order. Your transition area should look as calm, ready and focused as you before the starting gun.
